Li-Shan Chou, a professor of biomechanics who’s going to be department head of human physiology and director on the Motion Analysis Laboratory within the University of Oregon, is definitely the next chair of the Iowa State University Department of Kinesiology. He begins July 1, 2019.

Chou’s selection was announced Tuesday by Laura Dunn Jolly, dean and Dean’s Chair of your College of Human Sciences.

“Dr. Chou brings experience to be a department chair, a profitable record of research and grantsmanship, including a strong vision for working collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and partners to maneuver the department forward,” Jolly said. “His varied educational experiences and resolve for innovative programs get him to a substantial advocate for excellence. We’re confident that Dr. Chou can provide exemplary leadership to the Department of Kinesiology.”

Chou will succeed Phil Martin, who has served as kinesiology chair since 2008. Martin continue as chair until Chou begins his appointment next summer.

Third-largest on campus

Kinesiology contains the third-largest undergraduate student enrollment on the Iowa State campus, enrolling about 1,200 students who on-line massage therapy schools and collaborate about 30 full-time and 20 part-time faculty members.

The renovation includes state-of-the-art research laboratories; a brand new office complex; and new spaces as a student to examine, meet, or gathering.

Studying concussions among athletes, military

Chou produces Iowa State knowledge of areas of biomechanical analysis of human movement, orthopedic biomechanics, and rehabilitation engineering. He applies engineering and mechanical theories to boost the knowledge of mechanisms governing human locomotion and factors related to the improved incidence of falls in the elderly. His special areas of practice include clinical gait analysis, assessment of dynamic stability during locomotion, and mathematical modeling of your musculoskeletal system.

“One variety of research I am doing is related to brain function, concussions,” he explained. “Any injuries within the brain can be reflected the way you perform. I had been among the initial of persons in biomechanics who experimented with use walking like a paradigm to detect the recovery from concussions, from brain injury. I’ve been doing that for almost 14 years.”

Biomechanics – the usage of physics and engineering into the body system, examining the stresses, strains, and forces consumed by the human body as people exercise – can also be a place of specialty at Iowa State. The biomechanics research lab in 178N Forker is a 1,750-square-foot facility that’s perhaps the human performance laboratories housed while in the Department of Kinesiology. Researchers from the biomechanics lab include kinesiology associate professor Jason Gillette and professor Tim Derrick, who led the search committee for your new kinesiology chair. ?

A liaison who believes in transparency

Chou was developed in Taiwan. He received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees all in mechanical engineering. He worked for a researcher for the University of Chicago and Mayo Clinic before joining the University of Oregon Department of Human Physiology in 2000. He has got received research grants through the National Institutes of Health, Mayo Foundation, Medical Research Basis of Oregon, plus the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But at the same time, I’m the one that reflects the challenges and plans expressed through the faculty time for the administrators. I need to bear this communication channel as transparent as it can be. You don’t see any hidden secrets.”

Mission to market health insurance well-being

Later referred to as a Department of Exercise and Sport Science, in addition to the Department of Health insurance Human Performance, it had become renamed the Department of Kinesiology in 2007.

Chou said he embraces the department’s pursuit for promote health and well-being, in order to create and disseminate exposure to training and diet, to better people’s lives. He explained Iowa State University already has the most effective kinesiology programs in the nation. As chair, he’d try to cause it to probably the greatest in the world.

“What excites me in regards to the job – the department is rooted in physical education nevertheless you find out what you want, you intend to promote the science of workout,” Chou said. “You need to be a frontrunner in athletic training so you wish to hook it up to health science. Work out has played a very significant role in disease prevention. The bradenton area excites me.”
