YSU Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge Team Compete in National Competition

Concrete Canoe Competition:

Youngstown State University’s concrete canoe placed fifth in america at their fourth appearance within the American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition, held July 23-25 in San Diego, CA.

YSU earned the ability to represent the Ohio Valley Student Conference with the national competition by placing first at their regional conference in April. This has been in depth tutorials appearance that YSU has created within the national competition, where additionally?competed in 2008, 2012, and 2013.?

This year’s national competition had 25 qualifying teams, including two from Canada and a second from China. Also, approximately 250 teams competed of their respective regional competitions for the appropriate to qualify for the national competition.

YSU’s canoe, named Backdraft, was created as a tribute to the strength and courage of firefighters. The 20-foot long canoe weighed in at 229 pounds. The canoe was constructed from?1/2″ concrete layer with basalt fiber reinforcing mesh and steel prestressing cables.

Steel Bridge Competition:

Youngstown State University’s steel bridge placed 16th?in the American Society of Civil Engineers National Student Steel Bridge Competition (NSSBC), held May 25-26 by way of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

YSU earned the right to represent the Ohio Valley Student Conference for the national competition by placing first within their regional conference in April. Youngstown State has competed along at the NSSBC 13 right out of the last 16 years.?

This year’s national competition had 42 qualifying teams, including three from Canada, one from Mexico, and the other from China.?Approximately 250 teams competed inside their respective regional competitions for the appropriate to qualify for the national competition.

The competition?is judged based?on several criteria including: weight, deflection(when rich in 2,500 pounds), construction economy, and display.
