There would have been a buzz of pleasure when super spellers were put to examination to the final Spelling Bee competition on this school year at Chilton Primary in Ramsgate.

The summer knock-out tournament saw contestants all age brackets take to the stage at the whole school, staff and families.

Each incorrectly spelt word saw a contestant eliminated as tough words which have been about the national curriculum for a long time 5 and 6 challenged pupils’ powers of recall.

Awkward words that stumped most of the competitors included twelfth, rhyme, profession, nuisance and recommend.

The final two pupils left to battle against eachother to your advantage spot were Jake and Jamie, with Jake triumphant. A tense spelling shoot-out saw them accept words including sacrifice, dictionary, exaggerate, frequently, convenience and conscious.

Teachers Helen Rowland-Hill and Michael Pile co-ordinated the process. I was told that: “It is amazingly tough to go at the fair while you’re watching whole school with this competition.

“All the pupils did effectively and a variety of children knew the suitable spellings but were thrown by way of the occasion.

“All the language we ask the kids to spell are the type that we expect our Year 6 pupils to learn before they leave Chilton for senior school, so there were kids pupils tackling very tough spellings.

The Spelling Bee is held thrice each and every year and is particularly portion of the school’s ongoing literacy drive.
