Young athlete Poppy Rowland-Hill from Chilton Primary School in Ramsgate has won the superior individual honour with the Thanet primary schools sports awards,
Poppy, 11, was assigned her engraved award by champion sprinter and former Olympian John Regis on the ceremony run by Thanet Passport at Margate Winter Gardens.
Poppy, 11, that was nominated by her school, said: “It was this kind of astonish to win. I failed to expect we cried when my name was announced, it had been an extremely shock. It is just a big thrill to get presented it by John Regis.”
The Year 6 pupil says her favourite sport is athletics but she also enjoys netball and football.
She was joined on the awards by fellow school sports captain Casey Linney, also 11. He stated: “It was an honour to represent Chilton along at the awards and we’re happy the fact that school did well.”

Chilton’s PE Leader Dave Wheeler said: “The competition between a great number of Thanet schools was very tough in fact it is brilliant for Poppy to be recognised on her behalf all-round sporting achievements because of this trophy.”
Emma Knight, the school’s sports coach, added: “Poppy is usually a natural. For instance, she only started competing in athletics in November but without doubt she’s already ranked fourth in the united kingdom under 13 pentathlon championships, additionally, on her first work for balance 70 metre hurdles she broke the Thanet Athletics Club record.”

Chilton Primary also received the School Games Mark gold award. The university Games Mark can be a government-led awards scheme that rewards schools for their persistence for the growth of competition across their school and into your community.
Head of School Kate Law said: “Sport is an important part of the pupils’ lives at Chilton be it as individuals or together with our many teams. We encourage everyone have fun with it and turn interested in some way.
“Poppy’s personal achievement is well-deserved as well as Gold Mark status represents the wonderful work of our sports team and the way where we embrace the sport-for-all ethos so fully.”
