At the starting of August, students representing the YSU Ohio Xi chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon traveled to Portland, Oregon with the annual MAA MathFest, this is a joint meeting between your Math Association of America and Pi Mu Epsilon. Nine with the attending students gave presentations on the meeting. Crystal Mackey and Eric Shehadi, all of whom presented at the conference, were renowned for their excellence in student research. Also recognized within the event was George Yates. Yates received the Pi Mu Epsilon Advisor Award, that’s given one time every 3 years.
YSU does have it’s YSU MathFest, where kids are invited to discover math in fun workshops created by YSU faculty. The 2011 12th annual YSU MathFest is going to take put on October 23.
“YSU MathFest is among the most premiere YSU Math and Stats Department events where students are invited to YSU’s campus to enjoy a single day celebrating and learning about math. Kids get the chance to meet up with YSU students, talk with YSU faculty members in workshops, and explore what its choose to get an undergraduate degree in mathematics or STEM at YSU; but the majority importantly – have a great time!” said Eric Shehadi, that’s in the role of trainees YSU MathFest Coordinator for any third year.
Some from the workshops offered this year include “Mathematics of Diversity during the Environment,” where students will learn about mathematical diversity and evaluating biodiversity indexes, “Are That you simply Terrorist?” where students will explore statistical methods employed by agencies such as the NSA, and “Learning to split,” which explores dividing goods among several individuals so everyone feels they get what they deserve.
In accessory the workshops, students get the chance to sign up in mathematical competitions prior to a event possibly at the teambuilding.
