Plans Materialising For Half-Cent Florida sales tax Revenue To enhance Alachua County Schools

By a margin more than two to 1, Alachua County voters approved a half-cent local florida sales tax to boost school facilities. The sum of is anticipated to get about $22 million 1 year.

School district spokeswoman Jackie Johnson said every public school in Alachua County will finally be influenced by these funds. A large percentage of money is going towards Howard Bishop Middle School. Michael Gamble have been principal at Howard Bishop Junior high school for nine years.

“Howard Bishop Middle School was in-built 1962, and we absolutely need major classroom renovations,” Gamble said.

Paint, air conditioners and leaking ceiling tiles show the wear and tear and tear within the last six decades. Gamble pointed to places where ceiling tiles were see and explained how fix jobs just aren’t performing.

“Plugging leaks with only a finger inside the hole,” Gamble said, “it doesn’t help.”

With a fresh funding stream for varsity district facilities, Gamble’s school could possibly get brand new buildings.

“Gosh, I’d be pleased with new furniture in classrooms, but to acquire new classroom buildings that’s tremendous,” he explained.

Furniture would cost about $5,000 per classroom.

Gamble said these infrastructure improvements are sure to impact students.

“What we have to do is motivate students,” Gamble said, “making them excited about school. Making them want to find out if you then have a nice, shiny facility it impacts that.”

Three schools will be required to discover your money first. As well as Howard Bishop, Metcalfe Elementary and Idylwild Elementary will notice a large element of the funds according to Johnson.

“Those schools have obviously very, very significant needs,” she said.

There is really a prioritization list as far as the residual schools from the county have concerns.

“We will probably be prioritizing in accordance with the age the buildings, the healthiness of the buildings, the number of students they serve, what kind of money we’ve invested on them recently,” Johnson said. “So you will discover numerous of things that you must evaluate in making these determinations.”

Gamble is thankful town came through on the sales tax vote.

“We appreciate the support within the voters,” he stated.

Johnson said the district is while hiring architects to create the projects on the highest needs schools.
