Intern of year: Kyle Spickler

Every year, a student who shows exceptional work and with a positive affect an organization receives the STEM Intern of year Award. This coming year, Kyle Spickler, a senior majoring in electrical engineering and minoring in mathematics, received the award.

Spickler said receiving this award is one area that they has aspired more than the last few years.

“I was incredibly excited as i was notified as parent receiving the Intern of the season award,” he was quoted saying. “I have volunteered to your STEM annual awards banquet, where this award is presented, since my sophomore year. That i thought it becomes wonderful to acquire an award in that banquet someday.”

Spickler interned with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, where he gained knowledge in electrical engineering. He helped the Component Prep team below the Global Engineering division.

As a part of his internship, he programmed Programmable Logic Controllers and Human-Machine Interfaces for various projects. Spickler also volunteered to remain chair in the speaker’s committee for any Goodyear college relations program.

“We was able to earn 14 speakers that has a total of 11 events,” he said. “Most of such individuals were associates from various areas of the company. The speech topics varied from professional networking, logistics, ip law, brand marketing plus some others.”

One of his larger projects included getting a local fabrication shop.

“The objective for this project was to build and automate a product to cut ply at varying dimensions for any plant in Chile,” Spickler said. “Most of my develop this project was concentrated on creating diagnostic displays for that operators using HMI programming. This will give these people to change system parameters, view faults/alarms, check device status and a lot more.”

Spickler also had time to operate when using individual project called the Message Marquee project. He explained that Goodyear uses industrialized message displays throughout their plants, and Spickler discovered that their manufacturer’s software wasn’t as much as specs.

“To resolve this challenge I reached off to their application engineer and software team,” he was quoted saying. “After several conference calls and diverse era of testing in my part, their software team managed to solve many of the issues. Utilizing my research Goodyear european countries display other languages, eliminate some equipment and save roughly $4,500 as long as they implement these message displays within a plant.”

Spickler asserted that this experience – as well as a previous internship with ABB – made a huge impact on his occupation.

“Working from a field that combines the automation and automotive industries really I must accomplish with living,” he said.

Spickler has plans of continuing his education by finding a Master of Business Administration degree following in the market.
