I were raised in a very large suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, where our grandkids was 1 of 3 Jewish households in the community. We’re also Reform Jews. Essentially, we attended temple more 1 year, only when we were treated to to. We celebrated Christmas because we liked Santa and tinseled trees. And we dreaded about to my grandparents’ house for Passover meals.

The extent to what I knew about anti-Semitism was from history books and Anne Frank’s Diary. I referred to as Jewish as the kid given that it was the sole thing that made me distinct from my peers.

My mother, the most liberal of Reform Jews, decided long ago she wouldn’t force a religion on me as her parents tried. My dad considers himself Buddhist and my step-dad were raised in the Methodist church. Religion was obviously a choice around my household and that i never chose it.

Until college.

I reached the University of Florida during the fall of 2015 and suddenly found myself surrounded by Jewish students. UF has 9,400 Jewish students, the biggest of any campus in the states. They reduced the problem lay out with a journey of religion.

I never that will find religion while attending school, however did.

This past weekend, Concerning thought a great deal relating to this journey. Once the tragedy in Pittsburgh within the Tree of Life Synagogue, I’ve got reflected on my own experiences, or lack thereof, with anti-semitism. It can be whatever currently is so deeply personal in my opinion but, it wasn’t just a few years ago.

I was home in Orlando with my children when the news broke. My mother and that i were in the shock and shared exactly the same feelings.

“The question lately will not be in case your synagogue will be increased, the issue may be when ultimately happen,” my mother said.

This heinous crime has affected not simply the families of the slain, though the Jewish community features a whole. I felt a similar sadness that overcomes me anytime there’s a simple mass shooting in the states. Only on this occasion, it felt more personal. When I first came in Gainesville, I had created little comprehension of Judaism. I knew the culture, meals and holidays, but I never really knew the usual tenets with the faith.

I had no clue what Hillel or Chabad was. I had created never even met an Orthodox Jew. On campus, I have been suddenly bombarded with Jewish student traditions I have never discovered, like summer sleep-away camps and youth groups at temple. It felt like all Jew during this 53,000-student university knew the other we was the odd one out.

Then, in the summertime of 2017, I attended Israel on Birthright, a no cost trip for young Jewish adults to travel to the holy land to learn more about their heritage. I did no expectations of your trip except to sightsee as well as perhaps generate a few new friends who shared a regular heritage.

I wound up creating a bat mitzvah with the Western Wall at my most recent days in Jerusalem. I never planned on having one of these coming-of-age ceremony; my Jewish mother had not even mentioned it.?I felt I finally understood my religion.?It absolutely was accepting of others, encouraged curiosity and challenged me.

I never created to find Judaism attending school. It was not something I felt was missing from playing, until Israel. One small piece of me was fulfilled by knowing this worldwide community banded behind me.

It’s common for the younger generation to say they’ve found Jesus, Christianity or really any faith. But, it’s different for Jewish kids. Judaism isn’t something we could find because we are so ingrained in a very community our whole lives. Within my not-so-unique journey of finding faith, it took touring the holiest sites on the Jews to totally understand my identity along with what this means to be a “chosen one.”

I now attend temple at school and at home typically because can. I attended my first Rosh Hashanah services ever this current year. At 22, I’ve found refuge, hope and which means makes us a happier scholar.

Jews have just as before shown the entire world their strength and resilience once the shooting in the Tree of Life. Jewish students at UF came together to assist each other throughout this problem. Now i’m lucky to own been welcomed with open arms into this community and inspired to by asking questions.

I know I have a great learn however have my faith now to guide me.
