UF Terminates Athletic Training Undergraduate Program, Begins Process For brand new Doctoral Program

By Madeline Harlow

November 14, 2017 Education, University of Florida

Editor’s note: Situation continues to be updated to describe that your new doctoral program is with the transition and planning phase and should move through the state run approval process before accepting students into the program.?

The University of Florida need its last undergraduate athletic training students in summer 2019, eliminating the bachelor’s program in athletic training.

The UF Faculty Senate voted unanimously yesterday to terminate the Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training curriculum. The Strategic Alliance, that is certainly derived from four organizations within the athletic training profession, mandated that accredited programs no more accept students inside of a bachelor’s-level program after fall 2022. Programs must either terminate their bachelor’s programs or transition to your master’s program, according to Patricia Tripp, the athletic workout director.

“Our profession nationally is able to an experienced degree in the master’s level,” she said.

Currently, UF offers both a bachelor’s in athletic training along with a master’s with the athletic training specialization. UF is within the steps involved in possessing a doctor of athletic workout program and anticipates enrolling its first cohort in summer 2020.

The doctoral enter in development would have been a post-professional advanced clinical degree. Students seeking the ways to access this software has to be certified athletic trainers and have absolutely completed a specialist program with the bachelor’s or master’s level.

The College of Health & Human Performance continues to supply a 2-year master’s program in advanced physiology and kinesiology which includes a specialization in athletic training. However, should the doctoral program gains approval for summer 2020 enrollment, Tripp said they arrange to start the elimination process for that master’s concentration following admission within the 2019 cohort.

About 20 students are admitted in every BSAT cohort, and people signed up for 2019 should expect to obtain a similar standard of education as former students inside program. The termination of the bachelor’s program should have no influence on those students.

“We are externally accredited, so that we have to make positive most of the students are getting all what’s required on the accreditation,” Tripp said.

Within florida, you can find 14 athletic training programs. The University of Miami has recently transitioned to a professional master’s program. Depending on their websites, the University of Central Florida as well as University of North Florida may also be transitioning to a master’s program.

“Over 70 percent your profession provides a graduate degree or maybe a post-professional degree,” Tripp said. “Usually to learn on the level our students tend to practice, you might want more experience.”

Tripp said there are additional than 300 athletic training programs over the country. She said students can get this landscape to change while using the mandate. With a fewer range of programs, athletic training could be more competitive.

If a student attends UF right after the transition and wishes to pursue athletic training, she could find the applied physiology and kinesiology program. But, there won’t necessarily be considered a pre-athletic training curriculum. Tripp also noted anytime 2019, students who complete a graduate-level certified athletic trainer program elsewhere could well be qualified for apply to UF’s post-professional doctorate program in the event the program is approved.

“We are likely to offer and unfavorable reactions a feasible bachelors-level program which will help the scholar who means to get into athletic training meet their prerequisites to apply to a new program elsewhere,” she said.

Megan Kuehhas, a freshman, thought we would attend UF designed for the athletic training major.

“I was between UF as well as the University of South Carolina, of course, if I looked, USC was terminating the course the 2009 summer,” she said. “I didn’t prefer to visit the school generally if i couldn’t take the course.”

Kuehhas, who may be from Long Island, Los angeles, said she intends to further her degree by pursing sports medicine or physician assistant school.

“I played sports throughout my life insurance coverage,” the 18-year-old said. “So that sparked my interest that we would use medical knowledge to aid athletes because I can depend on injuries.”

Although it doesn’t affect her, she had not heard how the program was being terminated.

Antonella Valencia, the vp from the Student Athletic Trainers’ Organization at UF, started as a pre-health major. After completing observation hours with some other teams, she applied to the athletic training program.

“I’m hoping that as soon as I graduate, I’ll be a registered athletic trainer, and after that Allow me to carry on eventually to therapy school,” she said. “Eventually I must improve some sort of orthopedic center, professional team or a collegiate team.”

Valencia said most professional teams require athletic training credential along with a rehab doctorate, so she will be exploring that field at the same time.

“We go to discover things we’re also interested in in class and we find apply it immediately at our clinical site,” she said. “I feel as though we’ve got a couple of years of expertise before we even graduate, then it sets you up nicely for the workforce.”
