School Boards: A Part-Time Job With Full-Time Duties?

Jane Crawford, representing District 5 about the Putnam County School Board, knows what it takes to your workplace as a school board member.

Crawford said each of the jobs of school board members is to set policy and handle your capacity to purchase for any school district.

“But there’s a lot of other kinds of issues that individual board members do,” she added.

From fielding complaints from parents to attending workshops, meetings, and college graduations, North Central Florida school board members stay busy.

The main section of the job of college board members could be to talk with legislators, though the extent where board members personally talk with them varies slightly by county.

Certain counties, like Hernando County, have designated legislative liaisons, said Susan Duval, who represents the fifth district around the Hernando County School Board.

Marion County School Board Member Beth McCall, who represents District 2, said she and her fellow board members encounter legislators to express ideas from constituents.

“We let them know might know about aren’t happy with and why, and consequently, they earn final decisions,” McCall noted.

Twenty-six of Florida’s 67 county school boards appoint their superintendents; the residual 41 school districts elect theirs.

Alachua County school superintendent Karen Clarke said her job is usually to run the day-to-day operations of your school district and are employed at an advisory level with legislators.

The biggest challenge of your job at this time is school safety, Clarke added, because children cannot learn whenever they usually do not feel safe in college.

“It’s important we ensure that we’ve been doing everything we can to prevent our youngsters safe,” Clarke said.

How much do school board members receive money?

School board members are paid a salary using a formula involving countywide population ranges and base salaries. The salaries of college board members vary by county and so are adjusted annually.

Lafayette County school board members take advantage of the lowest salary from the state at $25,413. Broward, Hillsborough, Miami-Dade, Okeechobee and Palm Beach counties hold the highest salaries at $44, 443, based on the Florida Legislature’s Office of Economic and Demographic Research.

Since 2009, school board members also have the option to voluntarily reduce their salaries.

Eileen Roy, Alachua County school board member who represents no cost District, said she lowered her salary a lot in the event the recession hit.

“The good news is that everything’s return to why you’re normal, I keep my salary at just what the state board recommends,” she added.

“People really don’t work as school board members to generate income, I will tell you that,” said Becky Raulerson, Union County school board member for District 4.
Raulerson said school board members serve as they employ a heart for kids as well as the community.
