Women in Science (WinS) is a brand new STEM student organization at Youngstown State University. It had become designed to help promote the participation of girls in science-related fields.
Alexandra Fountaine, student president and cofounder of your organization, is often a senior studying psychology and biology. She actually is excited for WinS to develop and actually make an impact on students at YSU.
“When Gloria Steinem lectured at Stambaugh Auditorium last March, she said WinS ‘sounds such as a great idea’ and she wished us ‘the best of luck’ with his group!” said Alex. “Not many organizations can tell that Gloria Steinem endorses them!”
So far, WinS has hosted holiday bake sales in addition to a guest speaker seminar, and they’re aiming to collaborate with local middle schools and schools to get more detailed events.
Being female isn’t an requirement to sign up WinS. Gender inclusivity and diversity in science may be the real focus, so any students with a STEM major or minor are welcome.
“We desire to find novel methods to provide females while using encouragement and support you have to maintain successful educations and careers in science,” said Alex.
Students keen on joining or being familiar with WinS can email Alex at [email protected]. It’s a great chance of students, especially freshmen, to become linked to science-related events and then to improve a community on campus.
