Nick McGuigan is often a senior Physics student. He currently holds a 4.0 GPA. Nick was selected as one of the 2010 “Best of STEM” winners. He tied somebody else within this category, “Best of STEM”.
This is Nick’s fourth QUEST experience and that he feels the fact that QUEST program means him to formulate better presentation skills and networking.
The research he presented this holiday season was together with faculty advisor, Dr. Donald Priour, that’s a helper Professor of Physics and Astronomy at YSU.
“My research was aimed at void percolation theory, where we calculated the critical densities associated with a a number of barrier particle systems (which include spheres, cubes, etc.),” said Nick. “In essence, we developed a new theoretical approach to gauging whether or not particles, whether solid or liquid, can handle moving in the gaps of various densely packed systems without getting trapped midway.”
Nick was very proud of the task he’s done, and then he showed tremendous gratitude to the Physics Department plus the Choose Ohio First Program for his or her support in him.
“The Physics department provides many resources, namely usage of a supercomputer account, for my research,” said Nick. “STEM’s Choose Ohio First Program has also granted me the opportunity to pursue once a year scientific study to hone many necessary skills I must thrive from a scientific environment.”
After graduating from YSU, Nick intentions to attend Ohio University for his or her PhD enter in Condensed Matter Physics.
