The annual STEM Showcase provides students don’t just the opportunity present their research, but showing the area and area high school students what they’ve been working on all year. On April 26th, 2014, the STEM College had over 50 student projects to present this year, such as Baja Car, the Concrete Canoe, and nanoflowers.

The Showcase has been a way for the city to come out and share in the rush and excitement, but there’s the latest twist this current year. The STEM College gave out two scholarships to incoming STEM students who attended the event, in an effort to improve focus to all of that our STEMians have accomplished. Queen-Amina Chijide, from MCCTC/Canfield Secondary school, and Nicholas Bilas, from Cardinal Mooney Twelfth grade, were both awarded $500 scholarships.

All of the projects featured within the Showcase were phenomenal, and the nanoflowers weren’t any exception. Jennifer Miller and her group took a substantial amount of time setting up their project. That you had to setup multiple types of a barium chloride solution, each with varying pH levels. Then they placed their samples up to scanning electron microscope by looking for solutions would create the best flowers. The group also has developed a type of this project for students. Other projects this coming year included a group that presented an animatronic arm, along with a couple Additive Manufacturing projects.

Among other projects were demonstrations of several STEM attractions, similar to the new Center for Innovation in Additive Manufacturing and also the highly sought after Tesla coil. Kids, YSU students, and parents alike enjoyed seeing everything that YSU STEM is offering. For just a smaller school, YSU recently so much opportunity as a number of the larger schools, but on a more individual basis. The Showcase shows that there’s a lot of hands-on work which our students take part.

The Showcase was exposed to a very close together with the newer tradition of welcoming inside the new class of the STEM Leadership Society. While we’re both happy and sad to find out our first SLS class graduate this current year, we have been sure the most recent class will rise and exceed our expectations!
