YSU STEM and Beeghly College of Education hosted its second annual STEM Explore Summer Program for middle school students within the Youngstown area. Since the event has been so successful the last year, the STEM Explore Coordinators, Dr. Katie Cripe, Professor Robert Korenic, and Dr. Sherri Lovelace-Cameron decided there can be two sessions, the first running June 17th-21st and secondly June 24th-28th.

Each session was filled into the brink, with 25 students from areas around Youngstown. While some of the students from a year ago enjoyed STEM Explore a whole lot that they can attended again this coming year, this program welcomed many new faces. Several of last years participants were throughout the immediate Youngstown area, however, this year, the program’s participants expanded to Liberty, Columbiana, and Hubbard.

The students enjoyed taking part in several activities round the Youngstown area, including field trips to surrounding museums and activity centers, paying attention to speakers from YSU STEM, and hands-on learning activities. Students visited YSU’s own Mineral Museum, perfectly found on the lobby of Moser Hall, Oh Wow!, plus the REC center at YSU. They observed many demonstrations like how solar cars run, the rock cycles, and “Slime.” Additionally they participated in making Podcasts, Pasta Bridges, and many more. The students enjoyed several demonstrations and lectures by professors from YSU STEM.

These future STEMians experienced a fun-filled, busy week showing each of them YSU STEM could offer them from the many years to come. With regards to the STEM Explore Summer Program would be to spark affinity for STEM to middle school students. ?STEM Explore just isn’t an enjoyable week for any students, but a chance for students to obtain a better idea of that STEM is along with what they could apply it. Those things and lectures but not only stimulate a desire for STEM, but explain what future careers and successes may be found from buying the studies of science, engineering, technology and mathematics. YSU STEM, along side Beeghly College of Education, did an admirable job in 2010 improving lives of such area students making use of their STEM Explore Summer Program!
