For the past seven years, YSU, along with several Valley companies and sponsors, has held the Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition, where students apply different engineering principles to building small wooden bridges. Beyond 31 teams from 16 different area schools, Lowellville School Team B brought home time period place win last month 28th, 2014. Right here is the fifth period in seven years that a Lowellville team is taking home beginning.
Other awards got for other achievements. Second place was taken home through the Jackson-Milton School Team B, whilst taking home the Strength Award. The Wade Harvey Design Award was awarded into the Niles McKinley High School Team A. This award is given to they which has demonstrated a higher efficiency ratio and also scored full of aesthetics and complexity on the design. This award is named after Mr. Wade Harvey, a founder of the event, who lost his fight with cancer in 2010. A separate Aesthetics Award was shown to Poland Seminary High school graduation Team A. The next award, the Teamwork Award, was made available to Western Reserve High school graduation Team B.
The two teams from Lowellville were created from six seniors: Michael Minnie, Nick Micco, Nick Luccente, Phil Alfano, Tyler Rotz, and Vince Hynes. Their coach, Mr. Rich Popio, gets a considerable amount of time together with students. He teaches them lot of skills in her classroom, like AutoCAD, Robotics, as well as technology courses. Because teachers like Mr Popio are focused on their students and drive them to events such as the MVMBBC at YSU, four right out of the six boys for the teams work toward attending YSU this fall in numerous different programs.
While every single boys took part in last year’s competition, they described their thought processes and gave advice to next year’s participants. Their first bridge, Team A, enjoyed a slight bend and straighter pieces for support. In addition they regarded where every one of the weak spots may be and added reinforcements. The initial bridge held around 67 pounds. Their second bridge, the ultimate place bridge, held over 68 pounds by using a four-beam design. A few beams arch throughout the length of the bridge with cross beams for more support.
When asked about advice for next season, the boys laughed plus in unison said ‘glue the joints!’
We wish to thank ms consultants, the Mahoning County and Trumbull County Engineer’s Offices, the GPD Group, YSU, and also other sponsors for putting on a this kind of great event!
