Each month, we try to highlight one student organization in STEM. This month, we found two student organizations that happen to be really encouraging students to affix: Phi Sigma Rho along with the Society of Automotive Engineers.
Phi Sigma Rho
Though Phi Sigma Rho isn’t a a part of YSU’s Greek Life, this is a STEM sorority. President and industrial engineering major Sydney Negro explains them to welcome all STEM majors.
“The university doesn’t consider us a sorority, but we follow all national guidelines of Phi Sigma Rho,” said Sydney.
From coordinating t-shirt sales to joining the Society of ladies Engineers for events, Phi Sigma Rho is fairly active through the semester.
“We always engage in Relay for Life and we all check out Light night because our national philanthropy is definitely the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society,” said Sydney.
Most recently, Phi Sigma Rho held their Orchid Ball. With this formal, members danced, received awards, and socialized with alumnae.
“Our flower may be the orchid, so rather than calling it our formal, stage system the Orchid Ball,” said?Sydney.
STEMians considering understanding more to do with joining Phi Sigma Rho can contact Sydney Negro at [email protected].
The Society of Automotive Engineers
The Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, is actually a relatively small selection of at YSU. President and mechanical engineering major Kyle Hogan encourages students from the major to evaluate against each other if it is interested.
“We’re wanting to grow and have a few more recognition for any program and basically tell your friends likely to option for one of the motor heads that could be out there,” said Kyle.
The top level that SAE participates in is the Baja competition. They must design and prepare a vehicle that could do well in different tests, like maneuverability and acceleration.
“So it is certainly balancing a lot of different parts of your truck and perchance having points that are variable that one could change between events,” said Kyle.
Anyone wondering more to do with SAE or perhaps the Baja competition can investigate group’s Youngstown State SAE Baja page on Facebook or @YSUBajaSAE on Twitter.
“We’re very welcoming of anyone needing to may be found in and look out,” said Kyle. “Even when you decide you’re interested, that’s fine. If you’d like to learn, it becomes an excellent spot to do it right. Discussing gonna turn you away as you know nothing.”
